Garry Winogrand
I enjoyed the series of "Women are Beautiful," by Gary Winogrand. Women are always misjudged or portrayed a certain type of way and I feel that the series brought life to women not being judged and in their own pure moment of bliss. The images captured were uniquely unposed and the natural form of a woman looking beautiful.
Most of the series were all caught off guard, some seemed in action or in natural habitat, it made it more surreal to see the emotion of a woman face going throughout their night/at a party. The technique of taking multiple pictures of women and putting them together to see their emotion, body language and appearance is a beautiful thing. Especially making the entire series black and white is powerful. Everyday woman are judged on their appearance and deal with insecurities we shouldn't have to, in order to prove something to others. I wouldn't change anything about his work, each photo gave me a vintage vibe and felt real. It's easier to connect to a person in a photograph when you can feel or sense where they are, how they feel, and what their doing. One I really enjoyed most was the girl lighting the guys cigarette, so simple but empowering. She doesn't seem to care she's lighting his cigarette and it portrays a natural bond between their body language and how she is looking at him. She doesn't seem bothered or seem judged that it's "unladylike," it expresses a very relaxed, soft photograph, even when surrounded by all black and darkness, their captured in light of the night and moment. The picture of the blonde lady with the white dress caught my eye because it reminded me of Marilyn Monroe and Ashley Nicole Smith. Marilyn Monroe is my biggest inspiration, and corresponds to a women who was always misjudged in her world between beauty and success. This photograph is a perfect reference to what a Bombshell was seen as. I love how much in the photo, she looks elegant but promiscuous, and mysterious. The lady with the huge white feathers is very uplifting, like she as an angel but also revealing her sexual side.
